The conference is intended to investigate and assess the state of scholarship on historiography and African American intellectual history– two interrelated areas which have been the passion and focus of Professor Robert Harris' teaching and scholarship for nearly forty years at Cornell University. The proceedings of the conference will serve as a basis for a book to be published as a festschrift for Professor Harris.
Invited speakers include five colleagues of Professor Harris in the field of African American history, who either have worked closely with him or are familiar with his work and contributions to the field. Also invited are four of his former graduate students who did their doctoral dissertations under his supervision at Cornell.
The conference program will begin with a keynote session at 4:30PM on Friday April 5, 2013, followed by a reception. The next day (Saturday April 6, 2013) includes four sessions: Two in the morning and two in the afternoon (two speakers per session to allow time for good presentations and discussion). Each speaker will have maximum of 25-30 minutes each, to allow 30-40 minutes for discussion. Colleagues from Africana and Cornell will serve as Moderators and Discussants.
