Thaddeus Talbot, a senior in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, has been selected as the recipient of the 2014-15 Cornell Black Alumni Association (CBAA) Outstanding Student Leadership Award. This award is given to a senior of African descent for his/her outstanding leadership and efforts to enhance the lives of students and the community-at-large while attending Cornell University. The award is granted based on the following: (1) academic achievement; (2) leadership on campus or in community organizations; (3) contribution to improving relationships among Cornell students, faculty, administrative staff and/or the greater Ithaca community; and (4) commitment to uplifting people of African descent including future plans for contributing to CBAA, Cornell University, and the greater community. This award was presented to Thaddeus Talbot at the Black Students United 9th annual “It’s a Black Affair,” held on May 9th, 2015 at the Willard Straight Memorial Hall.
Thaddeus, a native of Brooklyn, NY, has participated in numerous leadership activities during his four years as an undergraduate student at Cornell. He served as co-president of Scholars Working Ambitiously to Graduate (SWAG) a mentorship program founded to enhance graduation and retention rates for Black men at Cornell for two years. During his term, the organization graduated 100% of its seniors with full- time jobs; President of Sphinx Head Honor Society, which actively works to uplift Cornell through various service projects and initiatives, from fundraisers to festivals; Task Force for the Retention of Black Men in which he helped with research on the factors that make Black men on campus successful; and most recently, he raised $1095 to attend the 50th Anniversary Bridge Crossing Celebration in Selma, Alabama where he served as a foreman for their annual Mock Trial competition. Thaddeus is a Meinig Scholar, ILR Ambassador, and Irving Ives Award recipient.
After graduation, Thaddeus will be working in the labor movement as a field organizer, then applying for law school to become a labor lawyer. CBAA is proud to honor Thaddeus.
Founded in 1976, the Cornell Black Alumni Association (CBAA) was conceived as an organization devoted to providing a communication network for Black alumni. Over the years, CBAA’s mission and scope of activities have expanded, resulting in programs that have a direct and significant impact on alumni and future Cornell students.
